Sarah Swafford wrote on her website Emotional Virtue .com,
When I was in college, a professor asked me to name some virtues. I responded, “Patience is a virtue,” and that is all the farther I got. It wasn’t until I started studying the virtues that it opened up a whole world to me. I don’t know about you, but I like having goals. I like to know what I am working towards. I always say, “Name it, claim it.” When you write it down, it’s no longer a “thought” or wishful thinking—it is set in stone.
I once asked a group of my guy friends what they found most attractive in a woman, and the answer was unanimous, “Holiness and confidence”. They said that even guys who were not into their faith would agree, though they might say, “A girl who is strong and sure of herself, and does the right thing—a good girl.”
The guidelines are as follows:
The Virtue Challenge is this: Every week pick a virtue from the lists above. Write it down, set it in stone. Put it in a place where you will see it. Make a list of three specific ways you are going to live out that virtue in your life. Then at the end of the week, evaluate yourself. You may even want to find a “running mate” a work-out buddy who knows the challenge you have set for yourself and holds you accountable. At the end of the week, look at what you have done to work towards your goal. Just like a runner who felt the ache of working out for the first few days – it will be hard. But once you have built endurance and stamina, you will be able to run for miles, and eventually something will feel as though it is missing if you don’t get your run in.
A group of girls and I have gathered on a facebook group page to encourage each other in reaching out virtuous goals! All of the traits on these lists are forms of virtue. Now, remember, no one is perfect, but a person who is striving for these virtues is a man or woman on a mission. The mission is greatness. We are currently on our third week but we have a long way to go! Then after we finish this list, we have a whole lifetime! This is a mission. If you would like to join us follow this link:
